Band 6.5 set · 88 questions

Build the Band 6.5 base.

The easier end of the bank — questions for drilling the structural fundamentals: a clear position held from start to finish, complete paragraphs, and errors that never leave the reader confused.

What Band 6.5 looks like

About Band 6.5 writing.

A Band 6.5 essay addresses every part of the task with a clear position, organises ideas into recognisable paragraphs, and shows some flexibility in grammar and vocabulary. Errors are present and noticeable, but the reader is never confused about what you mean. The questions below are the easier end of the bank, useful for drilling the structural fundamentals before stretching for higher bands.

How do I move from Band 6 to Band 6.5 in IELTS Writing?
The jump is usually about consistency, not flair. Address every part of the task, hold one clear position from the introduction to the conclusion, and organise ideas into paragraphs with a single main idea each. At Band 6.5 errors are still fine as long as they never leave the reader confused about your meaning.
Is Band 6.5 enough for university or immigration?
It depends on the institution. Many undergraduate courses and some skilled-migration streams accept an overall 6.5, but plenty of postgraduate programs and professional registrations want Band 7. Always check the exact requirement for your target before settling for 6.5.
What most often caps an essay at Band 6.5?
Underdeveloped ideas and repetitive sentence structure. Candidates state a point but don't explain or exemplify it, and lean on the same subject-verb-object pattern throughout. Extend each idea by one more sentence, and vary how you open your sentences.
How many practice essays should I write at this level?
Quality beats volume. Five essays you've graded against the rubric and rewritten will move you further than twenty you wrote once and never reviewed. Use the questions below, then grade each attempt to see exactly which criterion is holding your band down.

Drill until 6.5 is your floor.

Attempt one Band 6.5 question a day. Each grading shows which criterion is holding you under the cap.
