Band 7.5+ set · 31 questions

Enter the 7.5+ bracket.

The trickiest questions in the bank — multi-part prompts, scope traps, and themes that punish over-generalisation. Use them once Band 7 feels comfortable and you need a harder ceiling.

What Band 7.5+ looks like

About Band 7.5+ writing.

A Band 7.5 or Band 8 essay shows a wide range of complex structures with the majority of sentences error-free, uses uncommon lexical items skilfully, and develops a position fully with extended, supported ideas. These questions are the trickier ones in the bank: multi-part questions, scope traps, and themes that punish over-generalisation. Use them when Band 7 has become comfortable and you need a harder ceiling.

What separates Band 7.5 / 8 from Band 7?
At 7.5+ the majority of sentences are error-free, not merely frequent. Uncommon vocabulary is used skilfully rather than inserted for show, and ideas are fully extended and supported. Lapses become rare and stop recurring.
How do I push from Band 7 to Band 8?
Tighten accuracy and develop ideas further. Cut the one or two recurring grammar slips that keep reappearing, and make sure every body paragraph fully develops its point with specific support rather than a second general statement.
Do I need fancy vocabulary for Band 8?
You need precise vocabulary, which often isn't fancy. Examiners reward naming the exact mechanism ('screen-mediated communication', 'carbon-intensive industries') over thesaurus words used slightly wrong. A wrong 'big' word costs more than it earns.
Are these questions harder than the rest of the bank?
Yes. These are the multi-part questions, scope traps, and themes that punish over-generalisation. Use them once Band 7 feels comfortable and you want a harder ceiling to train against.

Drill until 7.5+ is your floor.

Attempt one Band 7.5+ question a day. Each grading shows which criterion is holding you under the cap.
