Coherence & Cohesion · 4 drills · free

Make the logic visible.

Coherence & Cohesion is scored on whether your reader ever has to work out how two sentences relate. These drills train the machinery: linkers that match the actual logic, paragraphs built in the only order that works, and referencing that stays clear.

What the examiner reads for

✓ One central topic per paragraph✓ Linkers that match the logic✓ Referencing the reader can follow✓ Progression without mechanical glue

Understanding the criterion

About Coherence & Cohesion.

Coherence & Cohesion is the criterion where more visible effort can mean a lower score. Band 6 scripts overuse linking words mechanically — a Furthermore on every sentence — while Band 7 asks for a range of cohesive devices with flexibility, and Band 8 for cohesion that attracts no attention at all. The skill being measured is logical sequencing: a clear central topic in each paragraph, sentences in the only order their logic allows, and references (this, such measures, they) whose meaning is never ambiguous. These drills train each of those separately, because each fails separately.

How many linking words should I use in IELTS Writing?
Fewer than most candidates think. The Band 6 descriptor explicitly mentions mechanical overuse of cohesive devices. Use a linker when the logical relationship needs marking — a genuine contrast or consequence — and let sentence order and referencing carry the rest.
Does paragraphing affect my IELTS Writing band?
Directly — it is named in the Coherence & Cohesion descriptors. Band 7 requires a clear central topic within each paragraph; no paragraphing at all caps the criterion at Band 5. One idea per paragraph, stated in the topic sentence and developed by everything after it, is the whole game.
What is cohesion, as opposed to coherence?
Coherence is whether your ideas connect logically; cohesion is the visible machinery — linkers, pronouns, substitution — showing those connections. You can be cohesive but incoherent: perfectly linked sentences that don't add up to an argument. Examiners score both, which is why logic-first drills beat linker lists.

Drills teach the rule. Essays prove it.
