Band 8.5 model answer

Parents are frequently confronted with the choice of educating their children privately or within the state system. Some are persuaded that fee-paying schools furnish a superior education; others resolutely favour public provision. This essay examines both options before offering my own judgement.

Those who opt for private education invoke tangible advantages. Independent schools typically boast smaller classes, superior facilities and abundant resources, enabling teachers to lavish individual attention on each pupil. Many also offer a rich array of extracurricular pursuits and confer access to influential networks that can smooth a student's later path. For parents who can meet the fees, such schools hold out an environment fixated on attainment.

Defenders of public schooling, however, raise considerations both practical and principled. State schools are free and therefore open to all, which renders them fairer and more socially diverse. Children educated alongside peers drawn from every walk of life, they argue, acquire a fuller understanding of society than those cloistered within the more rarefied world of private education. What is more, many state schools post excellent results, proving that a fine education need not be contingent on wealth and that a robust, well-funded public system enriches the whole community rather than a privileged few.

In my view, while private schools can deliver real benefits, I come down in favour of a strong public system. An education accessible to everyone, irrespective of income, strikes me as both fairer and ultimately healthier for society, and public money is better devoted to improving schools for all than to entrenching the advantages of a minority.

In conclusion, although private schools offer smaller classes and finer facilities, I believe a well-resourced public system is preferable, for it weds quality to genuine equality of opportunity.
