Countries such as China and South Korea begin structured schooling at five or even four, and their pupils regularly perform strongly in international assessments. Proponents also argue that early schooling narrows inequality by exposing disadvantaged children to stimulating environments and qualified teachers they might not otherwise encounter.

P3However, there is persuasive evidence that beginning formal instruction too early can be counterproductive. Child psychologists widely agree that children under seven learn most effectively through imaginative play, social exploration, and physical activity rather than desk-based tasks. Finland, consistently one of the world's best-performing education systems, does not begin compulsory schooling until age seven, yet its pupils rapidly catch and surpass their early-starting peers by early adolescence. Premature academic pressure can also undermine motivation, generating anxiety that persists well into later schooling.
