I side with the latter view.

Countries such as China and South Korea begin structured schooling at five or even four, and their pupils regularly perform strongly in international assessments. Proponents also argue that early schooling narrows inequality by exposing disadvantaged children to stimulating environments and qualified teachers they might not otherwise encounter.

However, there is persuasive evidence that beginning formal instruction too early can be counterproductive.
